AKAWonder Is Champion of 2017 SXSW Gaming Hearthstone Major

SXSW Gaming 2017 attracted some of the best Hearthstone players from around the world to Austin, Texas for another round of epic Hearthstone matches at the Hearthstone Major produced by GEICO Gaming and One Nation of Gamers.

Taking place shortly after another Hearthstone Major at PAX East in Boston the weekend before, many of the players at SXSW Gaming looked to either redeem themselves or to maintain their positions of power as champions.

In the end, the crowd was stunned as Spanish Hearthstone player Esteban ‘AKAWonder’ Serrano of SK Gaming carved a path to victory through players like Pavel, rayC, Xixo, and ultimately Astrogation for the title of champion and $4,000 along with 15 Hearthstone Championship Tour points.

After not having made it out of the Round of 48 at PAX East, AKAWonder had a lot to prove going into this year’s Hearthstone Major at SXSW Gaming.

With each critical match being played out to a full 3-2 series each step of the way, AKAWonder inevitably fell to the Losers Bracket forcing a potential double best of 5 series to play out against Winners Bracket champion Ray “Astrogation” Zhou.

Which is exactly what happened.

Even though AKAWonder took a decisive 3-1 victory over Astrogation in the first set, the second set required all he had to upset Astrogation in a final score of 3-2 for the 1st place position. And now, with another Hearthstone Major title under his belt, AKAWonder will begin to prepare for his next challenge.
