Security at SXSW Gaming

Safety is a top priority at SXSW Gaming. This post details some of the security measures that will be implemented to promote a safe and fun experience. You can also review our existing SXSW Gaming Attendee Safety page for general event safety information and tips.

SXSW Gaming Entry Procedures for 2019

Bag checks & Metal Detectors
Security measures will include the use of metal detectors, wanding, and bag checks at certain SXSW Gaming venues, including the entrance points to SXSW Gaming in the Austin Convention Center, as well as Gaming events outside of the Austin Convention Center such as the Gaming Awards and Closing Party.

Please be aware that these new security checkpoints could cause longer wait times to gain entrance into the Gaming Expo and Tournament Stage at peak times.

To expedite entry, attendees should:
* Remain patient and cooperate with staff instructions during security checks
* Leave bags at home unless they are absolutely necessary
* Have all bags ready for inspection as you approach the security checkpoint. (unzip pockets of backpacks, purse pockets, tote bags, etc.)

Cosplay Weapons and Code of Conduct Policies
SXSW has a weapons-free policy. Real weapons of any kind are not permitted under any circumstances. All prop weapons must be examined and tagged at the Cosplay Weapons Check Desk located outside Exhibit Hall 1 prior to entering any SXSW Gaming event.
Please view the rest of our cosplay weapons policy and our code of conduct here.

If at anytime you feel unsafe, communicate with venue security personnel or a police officer. In an emergency, dial 9-1-1.

    • might be damaging to people or property; or

SXSW has a strict weapons-free policy, no real weapons of any kind are allowed at the festival under any circumstances. Pack For Every Occasion – Be Weather Ready

SXSW Gaming is more than just an event. You’ll be attending sessions, attending tournaments, networking at Meet Ups, and hopping from one booth to the next. If you’ve ever been to Austin, you know that the weather can be unpredictable – be sure to check weather listings before you leave. That being said, Austin is a really casual city. If you want to attend panels in your pajamas, we won’t judge.

Plan For Walking… A Lot

For those of you in fitness challenges counting your steps – get ready to score big this March! You’re going to be doing a lot walking, be comfort-conscious when selecting shoes to pack. If you can manage it, you may want to have a change of shoes available. Your feet will thank you.

Stay Hydrated

We strongly recommend that you pack sunscreen and a reusable water bottle. The Texas heat can be dehydrating and the air in the convention center can be quite dry, but you’ll find water stations throughout the building to refill your bottle and stay hydrated.
